Ways to Use Technology to Reduce Stress

    Stress is a big problem in today’s society, and it affects many people from all walks of life. The problem is that stress isn’t easily quantifiable; often, it can be difficult to pinpoint the source of your stress or even determine if you have any at all. 

    Just as there are many sources of stress, there are also numerous ways to manage it. From heavy blankets, edibles by Hometown Hero to apps and devices. In this article, we’ll explore some examples of how technology can help reduce stress.

    Use an app to limit your phone/computer usage

    There are many apps and settings you can use to limit the time you spend on your phone or computer. For example, iOS has a useful feature that allows you to set time limits on apps so you don’t waste too much time with them. Mindlessly scrolling through Instagram or any other social app can take a toll on your mental health and ramp up your anxiety levels.

    Make use of devices to track and log your stress levels

    Tracking your stress levels is the first step in making sure you’re managing them well. If you’re not sure where to begin, try using a journal or app to track how often and at what times of day your stress levels spike. You can also use wearable devices that measure heart rate, breathing rate, and skin conductance (which indicates arousal).

    If you want something simpler than keeping track in an app or on paper, consider using a breathing app like Breathe2Relax (iOS, Android), Calm (iOS, Android), or Headspace (iOS, Android).

    Use technology to set reminder alarms for self-care

    To help yourself remember to take breaks, set up reminders on your phone. For example, if you know that every day at 3 p.m. is when you need a break from work, set an alarm for that time and use it as a cue to stop working and do something else (perhaps taking a walk outside or calling a friend/loved one). 

    You could also set reminders for other times throughout the day where it’s important for your mental health: maybe 6 p.m., when dinner should be ready; or 8:30 p.m., when bedtime rituals begin (turning off electronics, reading books before bed).

    Listen to relaxing music or guided meditation

    Listening to music is a great way to relax and reduce stress, but it can be hard to find the right tunes when you’re overwhelmed. There are tons of apps that offer guided meditations or soothing sounds, so try downloading one of those if you want something more specific than just listening to your own playlist. 


    While the above tips are just a few of the ways you can use technology to reduce stress, they’re all great. Hopefully, they will help you get started on your own path toward a more peaceful life.
